Track: 2 Nanotechnology in Battle Against Coronavirus

Since the outbreak began in late 2019, researchers have been racing to learn more about SARS-CoV-2, a virus strain from the coronavirus family named for its crown-like shape.

Northeastern chemical engineer Thomas Webster, who specializes in developing Nano-scale medicine and technology to treat diseases, is part of a team of scientists assisting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in their fight against the COVID-19 outbreak.

Webster's reasoning for using nanoparticles is that the virus causing COVID-19 has a structure on a similar scale to his nanoparticles. Matter is ultra-small at that scale, about ten thousand times smaller than the width of a single strand of hair.

Webster proposes similar-sized particles that could attach to SARS-CoV-2 viruses and disrupt their structure using a combination of infrared light treatment. This structural change would then prevent the virus from surviving and reproducing in the body.

Track 20: Nano Composites

Nanocomposite is a multiphase solid material with one, two, or three dimensions of less than 100 nanometers (nm), or structures with Nano-scale repeat distances between the different phases that comprise the material. In the broadest sense, this definition can include porous media, colloids, gels, and copolymers, but it is more commonly used to refer to the solid combination of a bulk matrix and Nano-dimensional phases with properties that differ due to structural and chemistry differences. The mechanical, electrical, thermal, optical, electrochemical, and catalytic properties of the nanocomposite will be significantly different from those of the component materials. The following size limits have been proposed for these effects: 5 nm for catalytic activity, 20 nm for softening a hard magnetic material, 50 nm for changing the refractive index, and 100 nm for achieving super paramagnetic, mechanical strengthening, or restricting matrix dislocation movement.
